DOCG stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, the highest classification in Italian wine law. It is a government-backed guarantee of both origin and quality. To earn the DOCG designation, a wine must be grown in a strictly defined geographic zone, meet lower yield limits than DOC wines, and pass a tasting panel review before release. Only a small fraction of Italian wine achieves DOCG status.

The Conegliano Valdobbiadene zone sits in the foothills of the Dolomites in northeastern Italy, in the Treviso province of Veneto. The terrain is steep and terraced, which means lower yields, hand harvesting, and wines with more concentration and aromatic complexity than Prosecco grown on the valley floor. In 2019, UNESCO recognized the Le Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene as a World Heritage Site, citing the area's outstanding viticultural tradition and the distinctive landscape shaped by centuries of human cultivation.
